Greg's Life Story
This is mainly here in case you have stumbled across my web page
and are wondering if this is the Greg Ward you knew in high school,
lived across the street from, dated (unlikely), were once in a
vicious street fight with (very unlikely), or had a wild,
drunken, one-night-stand with (extremely unlikely). (If you match
more than one of these, I want to hear from you!)
So here are the bare facts:
- 19 May 1972: born at St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal, Quebec
- 1973--1983: lived in North York and Toronto, Ontario
- 1973--74(?): lived somewhere in North York
- 1974--80(?): lived on Briar Hill Avenue in Toronto
- 1976--79: attended nearby Allenby Public School for junior
and senior kindergarten and Grade 2 (skipped Grade 1)
- 1979--83: attended the Prep School at Upper Canada College, a
snooty private school in the Forest Hill neighbourhood of
Toronto.
- 1980--83: lived on Lord Seaton Drive in North York
- 1983--85: lived in Omaha, Nebraska; attended Millard Central
Junior High School, a typical suburban middle-class
middle-American public school (that's not a compliment)
- 1985--91: lived in Des Moines, Iowa (actually the suburbs of
Urbandale and West Des Moines)
- 1985--89: attended Dowling High School in West Des Moines, a
typical suburban middle-class middle-American parochial school
(again, that's not a compliment: there's a reason they call
'em "parochial" schools, you know)
- 1986--89: active in the Des Moines BBS community; I dimly
recall names of some of the BBSes: Colorama, the 65c02 Zoo,
TARDIS, Buffalo Creek, ... and lots of others whose names
escape me
- 1989--91: went to college (as the Americans say) at Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology, a small, second-tier engineering school in
lovely Terre Haute, Indiana (affectionately known as Terrible
Hole). Terre Haute sits uneasily in the territory between the
Rust Belt and the Bible Belt, and shares the many charms of
both. The only good things about Rose-Hulman are the high
quality of teaching and the student-run radio station, WMHD,
where I spent many a happy hour on air broadcasting whatever
the hell I liked at 150 watts to a listership that may have
occasionally gone into the double digits.
- 1991--98: lived in Montreal, studying, working, and having fun
at McGill University
- 1991--94: did a B.Sc. in physics with a minor in
computer science
- 1991-92: lived on Summerhill Ave (just off
Côte-des-Neiges)
- 1992-93: lived on l'Esplanade Ave (between Rachel and
Marie-Anne)
- 1993 (summer): lived on Ste-Famille St (corner of Prince
Arthur)
- 1993-94: lived on Dorchester Ave in Westmount (corner of
Greene)
- 1993, 94 (both summers): worked at the Montreal
Neurological Institute
- 1994-98: did an M.Sc. (half-time) in computer science
- 1994-98: worked (full-time) at the Montreal Neurological
Institute
- 1994-95: lived on Stanley St. (between Sherbrooke and
Dr. Penfield)
- 1995-97: lived on St-Dominique St. (between Roy and
Napoléon)
- 1997-98: lived on Lavoie St. (just below
Côte-Ste-Catherine)
- 1998: lived on Durocher St. in Outremont (just below Van
Horne)
- 1998--2000: living in Arlington, Virginia and working for the
MEMS Exchange at the Corporation for National Research
Initiatives in Reston, Virginia
- 2001--??: back in Montreal, still working for the MEMS
Exchange as a full-time consultant
